The Day We Went to the Colosseum

The day we went to the Colosseum was a fairly standard low 80's high humidity day, except we had to be at the Colosseum at the time we normally were eating breakfast. Now on day three of being in Rome, we were feeling almost like old pros on the Metro system. You are, for instance, not allowed to take photos or videos in the subway system.  We had not encountered tourist scammers yet. As we made our way to the meeting place, one guy stopped us by complimenting us on our tans and said he could tell we had good hearts.  I know.  We stopped, eager to hear more about how he could tell by sight how wonderful we were, and he popped a bracelet on each of our wrists. Then more conversation, and he learned there were more children back at home, and he heaped more jewelry on us.  Then as we started to walk away, he said, "I have a new baby in my home country, can you give me something?"  Of course, I said, "No" and handed him back everything he had piled on us. Rome: The First Day

I'd splurged on a ride from the airport to the hotel so instead of dragging our bags from Fiumicino Airport to the train station, we scanned the crowd for someone holding a sign with my name on it. It said Mr. Lauren Trecosta, but we knew who they meant. We went out later that afternoon for a treat then pizza. By dinner, we were literally falling asleep at the table. Our room at the Flower Garden Hotel is on the small side, but is very clean and has comfortable beds, air conditioning, and a great shower.   Due to COVID, breakfast was delivered to our room instead of in the dining room downstairs which suited us fine. Elena at the front desk has been a huge help with directions and suggestions for using public transportation.  The hotel is just 100 meters or so from the main bus and train station. This proved to be very useful as we traveled everywhere by bus and metro. Mercato di Testaccio On our first morning, we took the metro to Testaccio to go to the covered market there. I&

Tips for Flying to Rome

I had a lot of questions preparing for our trip to Rome. Now I have answers to share in case they may be helpful to you. COVID-19 & Travel to Italy Every country is different. Every country uses its own phrases to say the same thing. We took the Rapid Antigen Test within 48 hours of arrival. We could have also taken the PCR molecular test within 72 hours of arrival. Print out the documentation. You will need it. Your vaccination card will serve as your Green Pass in Italy. You will need to show it frequently while traveling and throughout your stay. We've been required to show it at a skatepark and to rent bikes as well as at the Colosseum and other museums. In the latter cases, we also need to show identification along with the Green Pass. Italians generally wear masks indoors and out.  Oh, and paper masks only on Alitalia. This was our experience as of September 15, 2021. Passenger Locator Documentation We filled out a Passenger Locator Forms in triplicate.  First, we filled

Buying Tickets through Kiss and Fly

Sometime after the Jones Fire and the apocalyptic smoke last year, I decided the only way I could be in  California another year was to be gone for a chunk of fire season. And as long as we were planning on being gone, we may as well go somewhere interesting like, say, Italy!  No matter what it is, as soon as I deviate from the daily routine, a whole new world of learning and possibility opens up.  For me, it started with buying the tickets.  Kiss and Fly - Austrian Online Booking Agency We purchased one-way tickets for Rome through Kiss and Fly . They were the least expensive option for flights operated by United Airlines to Rome. After I purchased, I did my homework (backward, I know) and learned Kiss and Fly had terrible reviews. Not just bad, terrible. Generally, one star with a high of a two-star review on Facebook. This brings me to Little Life Lesson #1: Do your homework first.  We did get to our destination with Kiss and Fly; safely, smoothly, and on time. It did take some effo
